Escaping the Silence

Where there was silence
I built shadows,
I gave them smiles,
Personalities
And made them
Two-faced, difficult
And in turn, human.

Human

It’s our emotions
That define us,
Rule us,
As much as we wish they wouldn’t
They are intrinsically tethered
To memories.
We think we have control
But they are top dog,
In charge of our every move
When we’re curled up
In the foetal position
With our circulation cut off
From trying to hold the pieces
Together,
That is when we see how human we are
When one memory
Of one moment
Causes us to show
Our raw, unhidden pain
When we are truly naked
That is when we are
Our true selves,
Red eyed,
Unable to catch our breath,
Existing without any mask.
